My third oil painting to share. I am reasonably pleased with this one… in a couple of weeks flaws that don’t bother me at the moment may become too annoying but for now I am enjoying the satisfaction of completing the painting course and making some progress.
I like the idea of telling a story with a painting so in the future, I will think about setting and props when I paint someone. Here, I tried to create a mood with colour and the girl’s expression.

It looks like she’s made a tough decision or had some really bad news… definitely catches the mood.
Yeah, the teacher wanted me to paint her “happier” but when people pose for a long time they usually don’t have a big grin on their faces… anyway that’s how I saw her.
As usual, the photo isn’t great 😦 It’s hard to photograph paintings!
Hilary, I really like this, you have done a terrific job with the figure and hands. But it is her face that pulls me in: for me, she has an air of resignation: she knows difficulty lies ahead, but she is certain of her decision. great job! – Les
Thanks, Les! I’m glad you like it. Now, I just need to find time to keep painting over the coming year!
