Second Mandala – Slowing the Daily Whirl

This mandala was just finished yesterday and as I was drawing it, I realized I was attempting – almost literally – to unwind. The title followed…
Having a few days off work I felt I had the time to draw a fairly elaborate pattern and allow the space to quiet my mind. Once again, some patterns are “zentangle” inspired but this time, others came from looking at traditional Buddhist mandalas. A colour version may follow …but not today. 🙂

UPDATE: New poem from Tom! Just posting now since I was off-line for a few days …that also helps with the unwinding!
Thanks Tom! The poem really reflects the nature of this mandala!!

within wheels the turning turning forms
each exotic ecstasy enfolds
syncopated synergies the norm
countering the rotors of the bold
geometry and moments of the wheel
turning through the stations of the cross
reaching deep to find what’s only real
tessellating like a spinning boss
around the central singularity
wherein the secret sits alone unknown
enigma cloaked in puzzled mystery
beneath dark clouds the windmill’s arms are blown
by daily whirls of work and joy and sin
that spin the wheels and spin the wheels within

Mandala #1 – peace grows from the centre

First Mandala – Peace Grows from the Centre

Back in May, I decided to try drawing a mandala as a meditative exercise. As I was drawing, the title came into my mind. I just plunged into the process and no doubt there are layers of the meaning of mandalas and traditional motifs that can be delved into in the future. Some of these patterns are “zentangle” inspired.

Peace Grows from the Centre – water colour

The addition of water colour to the mandala definitely changes one’s perception of the patterns and relationships between the parts. It would be interesting to take the black and white image and use Gimp to see what difference the application of other colours would make.

UPDATE: New poem from Tom wonderfully capturing the feeling of this mandala – thanks!!

Layered flower unfolding out
from within the mind
to quiet sound and fury’s shout,
whispering, “Be kind.”

Almost-symmetries abound
interleaving forms
where shadows softly intersect
calming hidden storms.

From the very centre peace
grows outward toward the rim
until all conflicts, turmoils, cease
to sounds of gentle hymns.

cat and flowers

This quick 4″x 6″ postcard was inspired by a photograph in a delightful calendar from 2006 (A Cat in the Garden – photos by Del Greger). I knew there was a reason I was keeping it!

UPDATE: New haiku from Tom!!

fierce eyes threaten destruction
inner cougar purrs
