Abstracted Bouquet

Having fun with bright colours and bold shapes …and it turned into a bouquet in a polka dotted vase. Sometimes it’s important to not plan too much and just see what happens.

A portrait of my brother playing the viola. I painted this from photos I took while visiting this past summer. So glad I got to visit family then – no in person family time for Christmas this year. 😦

Anyway, this is an oil sketch on paper but I thought it turned out quite well. I may do a slightly larger one on canvas at some point. He’s a dedicated musician and composer so I am happy to catch something of that combined intensity and ease here.

All the best of the season to everyone and may 2022 be a kinder year for us all.

Rose Sunset

This is another in my “Skyflowers” series. Having so much fun with this. It’s whimsical and there are so many ways to play with the idea. Here I really like the cascade of roses transforming from cooler to warmer depending on how the sunset would affect them.

Abstract Reflections

Starting from an image of shadows and waterlilies on a pond’s surface, shapes dissolved and reformed into this. I find it curiously freeing to oil paint on paper …like I am giving myself more freedom to play.

Cloud Flowers

My next exploration with a big sky. This one was starting to get closer to what was in my head. I had a vision of clouds as flowers and thought “why not?” As artists we do not have any constraints expect those we put on ourselves. Kandinsky said, “There is no must in art, because art is free.” Whatever I imagine, I can paint! So freeing!

Big Sky

This one was an imagined view. I was thinking about clouds and this colours, shapes and patterns they make. It has more of a feeling of the landscapes where I grew up in Southern Ontario than where I live now on the West Coast of Canada. Fairly flat farm land with trees between the fields and dreamy puffy clouds.
